About University

John R. Everett was chosen in 1960 to serve as the first chancellor of the Municipal College System of the City of New York, earning a salary of $25,000 (or $229,000 in modern currency). The legislation creating CUNY was approved by the New York State governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1961. The legislation combined existing institutions and a new graduate school into a coordinated system of higher education for the city, which was overseen by the “Board of Higher Education of the City of New York,” which had been established by New York State legislation in 1926. By the year 1979, the Board of Higher Education had changed its name to “Board of Trustees of the CUNY.”

The following institutions were combined to form CUNY:

  • Free Academy – It was created as “a Free Academy for the purpose of extending the benefits of education gratuitously to persons who have been students in the common schools of the city and county of New York” by Townsend Harris in 1847. Later on, the Free Academy changed its name to City College of New York.
  • Established in 1870 as The Female Normal and High School, it was renamed the Normal College later. In 1914, it would once more change its name to Hunter College. Early in the 20th century, Herbert Lehman College, a division of Hunter College, was established in the Bronx.
  • Founded in 1930 is Brooklyn College.
  • In 1937, Queens College was established.
