Q: How long have you been part of PATH?

I also work with PATH and have been employed there since the last twelve years as a pediatrician specializing in child health interventions in sub-Saharan Africa. My first placements were working on vaccine delivery schemes and maternal health programs in various African states. I have worked in the Africa Region as the Chief during the last three years and was in charge of strategic operations and the development of programs. My experience with PATH has helped me to promote health equity in underserved populations using innovative technology solutions.

Q: Can you describe a typical day and what you enjoy most about your work?

I begin my day by making strategic planning calls to country directors in every part of our operations in Africa discussing program implementation issues. I would do this by keeping track of the vaccine development progress, hold meetings with governments through the health ministries and adhere to the international health standards. The best part to me is when communities acquire lifesaving health technologies like MenAfriVac, which eliminates preventable diseases in the communities. The assurance of equity to health is observed through the observation of children being vaccinated against something novel, and mothers being given superior services concerning reproductive health.

Q: What challenges do you face, and how do you overcome the hurdles?

The rural environments have minimal medical facilities that can have adverse effects on the adoption of various technologies and sustainable programs needed to support the target zones. One of the sustainable effects of the implementation of MenAfriVac in 26 African countries has been witnessed by the eradication of such a disease as meningitis A observed through the empowerment of the local health staff with new technologies. This will ensure continuity in change following the time of direct intervention of PATH.
