Practicum Hours Submission
My practicum experience enabled me to complete 50 practice hours that were allocated to the introduction of a mobile application that enables patients to transfer their health information safely to their provider or their healthcare team. Under the supervision of my preceptor, I assessed user needs and developed clinical workflows and mapped care requirements to technical specifications considering privacy, adherence to regulation and interoperability with the existing health information technology systems. I collaborated with developers and clinical stakeholders to find the features that enable patient engagement, accessibility and easy integration into care processes taking into account the factors of usability and performance and data security.
Much of my time was spent on polishing user interface, conducting iterative usability testing, troubleshooting connection and performance issues and considering the feedback of representative end users and my preceptor. I took pictures of bugs and improvement requests, prioritized, and made improvements to make various groups of patients less frictional and to make data capture more reliable. Practical experience helped me to build my mobile development and testing skills as well as improve my understanding of how to implement digital health in the clinical setting and raise my ability to communicate with nontechnical stakeholders about technical trade-offs.
I have also added lessons learned and recommendations to future iterations to guide the further implementation activities and stakeholder involvement. For example, one key lesson was the importance of involving frontline staff early in the design phase to ensure the new workflow aligned with their daily routines. The actionable recommendations to facilitate the adoption and workflow fit were the final step in the practicum, as they can be included in the solutions that help provide clearer communication between patients and their care teams.
