Hello everyone! I am Carol and today the topic of my presentation is strategic visioning with stakeholders. Stakeholders are the key participants when it comes to making any changes within the organization to improve its services. The engagement of stakeholders is highly important to make strategic decisions that are based on the vision and mission of the organization. Leadership qualities of critical thinking and problem-solving skills will be used for this strategic planning process to address the problems of the organization resulting from medication errors through enhanced communication and collaboration skills.

Strategic Plan Summary

The strategic plan is to promote a culture of safety by digitizing the processes of medication administration so all medication administration errors can be eliminated. Several technologies like bar code systems, smart pumps, dispensing cabinets, etc have been analyzed to prevent medication errors with a significant drop in the incidences (Vilela & Jericó, 2019). These technologies help alert the staff. A safe reporting method should also be established in the organization so no error goes unreported eliminating the blame culture. There should be enhanced collaboration and communication by assigning leadership roles like transformational leaders that would help bring change and motivate the providers to be role models.

Transformational leadership is based on the idea of sharing knowledge and working together to form a team by recognizing a common goal and working towards it (Liu & Li, 2018). This will help promote transparency and a culture of communication and empowerment. All the changes in the organization will be done with the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to measure the plan’s success and help it become more standardized (Wang et al., 2022). The weakness of this plan can be the increased cost of technological innovation that would have to be implemented in the organization and another weakness is the burnout in staff and leadership roles like transformational leadership.

Strategy for Communicating with Stakeholders & Constituencies 

For involvement and communication with stakeholders, it is important to first recognize the stakeholders and their roles that would be the most appropriate for the plan. Stakeholder theory states to ask questions to first recognize stakeholders, then map these stakeholders, and identify strategies to communicate with them for quality improvement (Elwy et al., 2022). The stakeholders that would be involved in this project are nurses, care professionals, patients, IT professionals, investors, hospital administrators, and financiers. Nurses, patients, and care professionals would help provide feedback on the changes and implementation of technology. Financiers and hospital administration would make important decisions regarding the budget of the organization and the investors would help play the role of donating money. IT professionals and other nurse informatics would ensure that the technology being implemented is safe with no risk of security breaches. These stakeholders would be making important decisions so some of the communication strategies to keep them involved would be using social media apps like Zoom or skype to hold meetings (Elwy et al., 2022).

Weekly meetings should be held to discuss important points and highlight concerns so they can be addressed. Emails could also be another effective communication strategy for the stakeholders. Such social media tactics would help the stakeholders stay altered and notified. Transparency must be promoted to have open communication that integrates honesty and empathy towards all individuals from different cultural backgrounds. The assumption on which these strategies are based is that all the stakeholders would have knowledge of the usability of social media for meetings and all the stakeholders would have cross-cultural knowledge to promote transparency and have empathetic discussions.

Integrating Structure, Procedures, Shared Values, Management Structure, Staff, and Abilities: Necessary Steps

To guarantee effective patient care delivery and patient safety, value congruence is crucial. The improvement between the alignment of the values suggested by the work environment and the values of organizations allows the staff to enhance care. Four themes were explored related to value congruence in a study that was: nurse and supervisor values in conflict, organization values unaligned with the work environment, nurse’s values unaligned with the work environment, and personal and professional value alignment (Dunning et al., 2021). The incongruence identified was mostly related to poor patient safety and care, burnout, and poor well-being (Dunning et al., 2021).

Every nurse in the organization will have values that will impact their way of work or attitude. Value incongruence can negatively impact patient safety as there is increased burnout and low satisfaction with the job (Kaya et al., 2020). Assigning leadership positions to nurses and developing a greater sense of self-awareness among them are two crucial steps that can be taken to align framework, procedures, common values, management style, staff, and abilities. Leadership roles can have a positive impact on job satisfaction. One such leadership style is transformational leadership which would increase the motivation of the staff and drive work toward the organizational values promoting better safety and care for the patients (Boamah et al., 2018). Self-awareness can help improve job satisfaction too as the staff would be better aware of their roles, performance, and the desired goal that they have to achieve (Dunning et al., 2021). All the values have to be taken into consideration and there should be a shared-decision making that makes all the staff members feel heard. The criteria for evaluating the success of this would be to measure employee satisfaction with the help of questionnaires and surveys to see what the average satisfaction level is.

Implementation & Outcomes of a Strategic Plan

A strategic plan needs to be implemented that reduces medication errors, ensures patient safety, and improves patient outcomes and satisfaction. To do this, a plan needs to be implemented that makes technological use. Several pieces of literature support the intervention of multiple technological implementations like bar-coding systems and automated dispensing cabinets (Manias et al., 2020). This is suggested along with education on medications for staff development (Manias et al., 2020). Improvements in patient safety and care have been recorded with increased knowledge of medication administration and the implementation of bar-code systems and automated dispensing cabinets (Manias et al., 2020). The PDCA cycle would be the most helpful standardized method for the implementation of this strategic plan as it would allow the organization to highlight and understand the problem, develop and implement the plan, check the plan for areas of improvement, and act upon them (Wang et al., 2022). The outcomes can also be mentioned by assessing the medication errors occurring after implementation and comparing them to before. Indicators can be used to evaluate the plan and surveys will help measure the success. The short-term goal of this plan is to provide education to the staff regarding medications, their use, the prevalence of medication errors, and how to avoid them. Long-term goals would be to implement the technological intervention. The area of uncertainty would be the usability of the staff when interacting with technology, it is unknown if the staff has experience with technology. This area of uncertainty would then require training to fix the knowledge gap that the staff might have related to the technology being implemented.

Relevant Cultural, Ethical, & Regulatory Considerations

When putting the strategic plan into action, certain cultural, moral, and legal factors must be taken into account. A just culture has to be maintained that prevents the blame culture. Many of the errors in organizations go unreported because of the fear of repercussions which may put the healthcare providers under stress, self-doubt, anxiety, and depression. A supportive, positive, and ethical environment must be promoted (Rogers et al., 2017). Lack of medication reports also leads to patient safety risks as the mistakes are not identified and improved. A culture of safety needs to be maintained with open communication and collaboration that facilitates reporting and promotes accountability.

Another regulatory consideration that needs to be kept in check is the Health Insurance and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for the maintenance of patient confidentiality when implementing technological interventions (HIPAA Journal, 2022). These technological platforms would store thousands of sensitive patient data that have to be protected with encryption and password protection, as suggested by HIPAA. The conflict with these regulations can be measuring compliance amongst the staff and ensuring that there is adherence.

One’s Role as a Nursing Leader

As a nurse leader, it is my role to ensure that all the practices and implementations that take place within the organization are evidence-based and align with the organization’s mission and vision. The strategies or approaches to be taken towards a strategic plan should not only be about the short-term goals but also the long-term goals. Keeping the transformational leadership theory in mind, as a leader, it is my responsibility to empower and motivate my staff to facilitate the changes required for the plan and ensure that they get well-adapted to it. I will guide my staff to overcome the barriers and areas of uncertainty to ensure that the plan is a success. I will also enable cross-cultural communication to overcome any communication barriers so there is collaboration and there is the promotion of a safe and culturally sensitive environment that practices empathy towards each other. The assumption made during this analysis was that all the staff members will be cooperative.

Leadership Qualities & Skills to Implement a Strategic Plan

My strategic and transformational leadership qualities would help implement the plan as I would be able to develop a vision and effectively communicate about it with the staff. My qualities of accountability would allow me to take ownership of the position. The analytical skills would allow systemic, measurable, and strategic choices to be made. As a strategic leader, I would know how to empower my staff and ensure there is compliance with honesty and empathy when carrying out practices. This plan would give opportunities for personal growth like enhanced communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills that would be helpful in future plans.


The goal of the healthcare organization is to reduce medication errors and enhance patient safety. This would be done with the implementation of strategies like technological intervention and staff education. Transformational and leadership qualities would be applied to facilitate changes and empower the staff to make the plan successful.
