Care Setting Environment Analysis

In all parts of the world, healthcare systems are important to improve the well-being of citizens. Technology is evolving rapidly worldwide to improve care quality. Nurses and practitioners must evaluate what works best for their customers which is why quality appraisals are vital such as SWOT analysis to compare strategies. This study considers the Plan-Do-Check-Act model that helps medical professionals to plan and gather resources, implement the plan, identify errors, and make final adjustments to the plan (Wu, 2022). Many researchers have discussed the importance of this PDCA model in terms of nursing compliance and treatment efficiency. In this study, this model will help professionals to improve healthcare outcomes.

Evidence Related to the Best Performance of Care Settings

In Vila Health Hospital, there is a significant need of improving quality and safety outcomes. The organization is striving hard to improve itself which shows its commitment towards improvement. After taking interviews with healthcare professionals, registered nurses, and twenty patients, sixteen of these patients stated that their overall experience with the staff of this hospital has been positive. The evidence shows that timely delivery of medications and treatments was ensured with improved collaboration between nurses, patients, and doctors. Moreover, 12 out of 16 nurses who were interviewed also revealed that medication errors and flaws happened due to their increased workload. However, the average discharge time was unknown information in this context that needs to be measured to improve processes and staff collaboration.

Positive, Attainable Quality and Safety Improvement Goals for Care Setting

The organization suggests leading nurses to create SMART goals regarding the safety and quality of care services that are specific, measurable, attainable, time-bound, and relevant. The importance of creating SMART goals has been discussed by many researchers in terms of improving productivity, reducing time and cost, and meeting objectives (Wu, 2022). Using these goals will help the staff and the leaders to reduce any inequalities and injustices in the organization and help to align these goals with the mission and vision of the organization. This goal is attainable when professionals and stakeholders all join hands together and collaborate and communicate openly to foster improved relationships. This helps to bring the necessary change in the organization to create effective partnerships with teams and embrace teamwork.

Moreover, according to Liu (2017), collaborative strategies are vital for healthcare organizations and professionals to help staff make better decisions and define clear roles and goals. For example, some nurses may feel overworked and that might be impacting their overall work quality and creating more errors related to medications and prescriptions. Sharing knowledge and ideas through collaboration is vital to enhance the efficiency of professionals. Therefore, the hospital is focusing on the PDSA approach this time to ensure that quality improvement happens and the necessary change in the organization. The initiatives and strategies are built on the assumption that these SMART goals can serve as a guiding light for our nurses through better collaboration and communication to bring vital and positive change to the organization (Kuchler, 2021).

SWOT Analysis of the Organizational Settings

The SWOT analysis is a vital tool to determine the organization’s performance and measure its capacities to ensure growth in the future (Wu, 2022). This analysis of Vila Health Hospital is crucial to make growth-related decisions and providing more insights and ideas for sustainable development. For example, the following table shows the SWOT analysis of the organization:

Strengths

  1. Staff is highly motivated
  2. Minimum discharge time of patients
  3. Increased and improved collaboration
  4. Staff has clear job roles and expectations from their managers
  5. No healthcare disparities

Opportunities

  1. Better funding
  2. Improved technology incorporation for sustainable development
  3. Training and knowledge improvement

Weaknesses

  1. Proof of increasing medication errors
  2. Resources are lacking
  3. The workload on nurses is increasing
  4. Expensive services
  5. Beds shortage

Threats

  1. More competitive firms in the demographic region
  2. Nurses shortage and de-motivation
  3. Resistance to change

The above table of SWOT analysis shows that despite many positive aspects and resources, the hospital still has significant room for improvement related to workload, human resources management, and improving awareness to embrace and encourage change. Therefore, concerning meeting the quality and safety goals of the organization, some conflicting data is also present that discourages employees to meet their holistic goals and missions.

The Area of Concern Identified In a SWOT Analysis

After analyzing all the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats linked with the organization, the SWOT analysis shows that quality and safety standards can be improved and maintained only when the areas of weaknesses are addressed adequately. The analysis shows vulnerabilities such as the shortage of human resources, beds shortage, the significant workload on nurses, etc. Moreover, the most important issue in the organization that needs immediate attention is the lack of quality communication that can improve the use of technology and reduce drug errors (Hosseinnejad et al., 2022). Therefore, the company must carry out weekly audits to maintain quality and this can be evaluated by measuring the staff and the experience of customers and how satisfied their families are using surveys.

Comparing AI and SWOT Strategies

The SWOT analysis helped the management and DNP nurses to view the positive and negative aspects surrounding organizational settings. It helps to identify all the internal and external issues to enhance future decision-making (Hlungwani, 2017). This analysis has been beneficial because it helped nurse leaders to identify all the loopholes and crisis-causing issues. Therefore, the use of this tool has also been suggested by several experts. On the contrary, some experts believe that the outputs of this analysis can be easily misunderstood by professionals and nurses may lose their focus on one crucial element of communication improvement and rather go on focusing on other aspects.

The use of the Appreciative Inquiry tool (AI) helps professionals to understand realities in five phases; the first phase is determining the topic of interest; focusing on the current issue and how it can be solved; imagining and planning different possibilities, implementing the proposed plan, and finally, destiny where the action plan is going to be most beneficial for the customers (Eltaybani, 2021). Hence, using the AI tool is a more comprehensive approach as compared to SWOT analysis because it helps to determine several factors and elements that SWOT analysis fails to identify.

Leadership and Collaboration for Solving Problems

Since currently there are several quality and safety concerns in the hospital, leaders and leading nurses have a huge responsibility of forming effective teams to collaborate effectively. For instance, nurses must plan an efficient division of responsibilities to help junior nurses perform well in their daily shifts. This shows that they can use the transformational leadership model to enhance the effectiveness of their strategies and show empathetic and charismatic qualities to their followers so that they can remain motivated to achieve high-quality goals.

In addition to using the transformational leadership model in Vila Hospital, using the AI tool as a transformational tool can help to bring the necessary change in the organization. The use of SWOT analysis is also a viable method that aims to foster transformational leadership by identifying threats and opportunities for future leaders to improve their overall strategies and communication (Agarwal et al., 2022). This means that current leaders must ensure collaboration cultures in the organization to improve the practices of doctors and nurses to enhance patients’ safety and quality outcomes. However, there would be some areas of uncertainty surrounding the results of the SWOT analysis and leaders need to take steps to divide responsibilities and reduce the workload of junior nurses to reduce burnout.

Conclusion

Effective and SMART goals help organizations to improve their systems and identify loopholes in their current and existing strategies and resources. The mission of Vila Hospital is to ensure the best quality of care services for the customers. The SWOT analysis compared to the AI approach shows that SWOT analysis has its limitations in helping learners understand their roles and how they can use AI as a tool to address the weak elements.
