Informatics and Nursing-Sensitive Quality Indicators

How Healthcare Organizations Use Nursing Sensitive Indicators to Enhance Safety

Nursing-sensitive quality indicators are the outcomes that are often predicated upon nurses’ scope competence; the researchers have emphasized this phenomenon, which helps them use these indicators to represent the structure, method, and results of nursing practices. The structural indicators include all the nursing staff availability and skill levels in addition to their educational competencies. Moreover, workflow indicators are used to evaluate health assessment and clinical interventions provided by nurses. One more vital indicator to mention is the job satisfaction indicator. Hence, when the satisfaction of nurses as employees is measured, the process indicator must be examined.

Moreover, there are outcome indicators that comprise nursing-sensitive health consequences. These consequences are also related to patient care and nurses’ quality outcomes. For instance, nurses can evaluate pain and devise the right interventions included in the process indicators. This helps them reassess pain management and improve the pain-related issues of patients suffering from ulcers. Moreover, cardiac arrest is another complication or outcome related to some other aspects and has no relation to nursing-sensitive indicators. Moreover, in 1999, the American Nursing Association proposed ten vital nursing-sensitive indicators for acute patients (Specchia et al., 2021). Nursing-sensitive performance measures can act like tools to enhance the efficiency of evidence-based clinical approaches.

How a Selected Quality Indicator Provides Evidence-Based Guidelines for Nurses

The quality indicator that I have chosen for this assignment helps to focus on the structural indicators. The structural indicator emphasizes the nursing competencies, availability, and education level in the organization. The indicator is important in the context of our organization for an important reason.

Importance of my chosen quality indicator

This nursing-sensitive quality indicator is important in this context because it helps our organization effectively measure the performance of nurses and their satisfaction with their given competence level. It helps to understand the role of nurses in the organization and measures their performance and their direct participation in the organization’s system to promote positive patient care outcomes (Must, 2018).

Impact of Structural indicators on the quality of care and patient safety.

Let me discuss the impact of structural indicators according to evidence-based researchers. According to a study published by Shin (2018), the mortality rate is likely to decrease with the increase in the nurse-to-patient ratio. This study examined over 800 participants to show that the mortality rate rose to 95% with the increased nurse-to-patient ratio. This indicates that the per-patient ratio of nurses should be decreased to lessen the stress of nurses. An increased nurse-to-patient rate also increases the chance of medical and drug administration errors. The Massachusetts Nurses Association also conducted a survey that showed the registration of an excessive number of patients by three-quarters of nurses. This raises a serious quality concern due to the maximization of patients in organizations. This claim is also backed by the study of Speeches (2021) that states that increasing the nurse to patient ratio is vital to improve patient safety, quality outcome, and treatment quality.

Moreover, the structural indicator also aims to measure and enhance nurses’ levels of education and skills. Nurses have the talent to manage patients and provide good care when they are more relaxed a defocused. For both inpatients and outpatients, nurses provide direct medical help and collaboration. This shows that using the structural indicator, the vital role of nurses can be improved and assessed and how many patients they treat to offer suitable treatment (Shin, 2018). This shows a dire need for nurses to familiarize themselves with the chosen indicator particularly. The fact remains that while offering patient care, often, newly-hired nurses make mistakes of ignoring structural quality indicators. THz is what I will discuss ahead.

The structural indicators must be appreciated to improve the health care practices of new nurses who are still young and unfamiliar with these indicators and their implementation. Senior nurses’ duty is to be reminded of the importance of their skills and competencies and encourage them to quality well to earn different certifications (Mushta et al.,2018). Certified nurses can better manage tools. The EMR nurses should raise their skills for providing better emergency services to patients and gain more accreditated qualifications from prestigious online or on-site educational institutions to enhance the quality of satisfaction (Eltaybani et al., 2021)

Collection and Distribution of Quality Indicator Data

After I interviewed the quality control officer in our organization regarding structural indicators, I learned about data collection for nursing-sensitive quality metrics. Everything was included in the data, including the number of patients, the number of healthcare personnel available, and the quality of nursing care. Moreover, the patient’s reaction to the medicine given to them was also observed.

How was data collected on this quality indicator?

The data on structural indicators was collected by the quality assurance officers and nurses using a range of tools. The department collected the data by considering the nursing staffing in a facility and the day-to-day average number of patients was collected. The patient survey was formulated for data collection purposes.

How does the organization spread the aggregate data?

When the data was collected, the data interpretation and analysis phase began with the quality assurance department. This was done using Microsoft excel tool and Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. The report was prepared that contained different inferences derived from the collected data analyzed by the facility. Moreover, a quality assurance certification was also included in the department’s report that shows the quality of the nursing staff and how many nurses were available, such as certified and inexperienced nurses. This data was valuable for the human resources department that called nurses to appear before the recruiting officers and described their situations.

The Role of Nurses in Supporting Accurate Reporting for Improving Outcomes

The accurate reporting aimed to enhance the outcomes of nurses. The data and the information helped to determine nurses’ actions, and data can be used for their betterment. However, any error in the data collection process can be harmful and result in prescription errors, leading to patients’ illness. This means that senior nurses must supervise new nurses to enter patient information and verify the data to arrange it in a sensible manner (Berry, & Melmed 2018). Seamless access to data is a crucial part of nurses’ responsibility because gaining results from data is the primary and vital objective. Therefore, the patients’ records must show accurate data and be updated as soon as new data arises.

Why Data Should be Entered Accurately for Nursing Interventions

The accurate recording of data and vital information is indispensable because it measures nurses’ responsibility to meet their duties in professional environments (Báo et al., 2019). The nurses ought to make every effort to reduce carelessness or save accidental errors that relate directly to patient safety and try to engage other nurses in record-keeping activities.
